Energy Scotland draws upon the vast expertise residing in the Scottish energy sector. We are made up of project developers, customer-facing energy suppliers, energy generators, system operators, academics and technology solutions providers who all have proven track records in the energy industry. Our Steering Group works in close collaboration with a large and growing network of associates, who together bring a considerable breadth and depth of experience and expertise to bear on the current and emerging issues in the Scottish energy sector.
Convenor & Membership Secretary
With a First Class Honours degree in Industrial Engineering, John brings to the group a deep understanding of the energy sector and provides key insights into the challenges that Scotland faces as it addresses its energy future. Having started his career as a Mechanical Engineering Apprentice, John spent 15 years at John Brown Engineering. He then joined Intergen where he spent 28 years, most recently serving as General Manager and Head of Engineering and Operations. John's work encompassed the construction and operation of 7 GW of CCGTs in UK, NL and Turkey, and his knowledge of the Scottish energy sector is extensive.
STEM/Technology
Now a Director of Star Renewable Energy, Dave has been involved in renewable heat since 2009. He has supported projects up to 5.2MW in size - the largest high temperature river heat pumps in Britain. Dave is a vocal proponent of clean district heating technologies - as can be seen in his Clean district heating on how environmentally sound district heating schemes could benefit Scotland's economy and form a key part of a Just Transition. Dave is a graduate of Strathclyde University with a B.Eng in Mechanical Engineering with European Studies & Business Management, and a Masters Degree in Business Administration. He has been a prominent heat pump campaigner for several years and currently sits on the Scottish Energy Advisory Board. He is also Chairman of CeeD-Scotland a peer to peer knowledge sharing group with 200 members across Scotland with clinic areas including lean manufacturing, marketing, energy, and HR. In 2022, Dave was appointed as a Visiting Professor by the Royal Academy of Engineering and supports the work at Edinburgh Napier University.
Strategy
David is a mechanical design engineer who spent his career in the design, manufacture and commercialisation of renewable energy generators. With a Master's Degree in Engineering Design and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, David is a Chartered Engineer who has co-founded companies in the wind energy, tidal energy and renewable energy consultancy sectors, and has over 30 years of experience in the Scottish energy sector. David has a deep understanding of the technical and commercial challenges associated with bringing emerging renewable energy technology to the market in Scotland, Europe and worldwide, as well as a keen understanding of the environmental impact of how we generate and consume energy.
